June and Lucy

On this amazing, sunny morning, Lucy gets ready for her first day of eighth grade, while mom, June, a writer, helps schlep books, bags and instruments. June and Bill, her husband of 24 years, adopted Lucy from China, 12 years ago. The annual first-day-of-school photograph is a family ritual.

Q. What do you love most about your mom?
A. (June) I love that Lucy has such a big and kind heart. And she’s a wonderful sous chef.

Q. What do you love most about your daughter?
A. (Lucy) She helps me with basically everything I need, especially with my English homework. Not my best subject. And I love cooking with her.

What’s love got to do with it? We think everything. Who hasn't seen a statuesque beauty making out with her pocket-sized beau and wondered "Just exactly how does that work?" As a writer/photographer team with eons of experience, we've interviewed all kinds of people from drag queens to prom kings, the wealthy to the weary - the beautiful and the belligerent. We weren't afraid to ask Hillary Clinton about empty-nest syndrome or a 911 widow about her last good bye. So we’ve given ourselves a year to walk up to people and ask them all those questions about love that we’ve always wanted to ask. Truth be told – we’re nosy. We love to hear about and talk about the L word. Don’t judge. We practice what we post. We've dated, cohabited, hooked up and hitched. We've had children. We've had fights. We've buried the hatchet and we've buried a spouse. Sometimes we’ve lost our way but we never lost the faith. And we’ve asked ourselves many of the questions we plan to ask others. We believe in the power and pathos of love in all its forms and in the next 12 months we plan to capture it in images and imagery. Have a question you’d like us to ask or that you’d like to ask us?
